A lovely example of an ‘Assommoir Grillage’, a French rodent trap.
The mesh ‘paddle’ is held up against the wooden frame by a complex trigger, held by thin string tied to the loop on the base.
The string is coated with bait, like soft cheese or fat and when the mouse chews through it the killing arm is released.
A real conversation piece.
Basically sound but the staple holding the spring to the upright is missing, so the spring slides when you set it.
Evidence of historic beetle damage but appears inactive.
