Description
This is a huge and very impressive European gin trap, probably French and designed to catch large predators like Wolf or Bear.
The original pan was probably all metal but has been replaced with a well made and pleasantly presented wooden pan, attached to the original iron backbone. The replacement pan is showing indications of significant age in it’s own right.
It’s hard to tell from the photographs just how impressive the size of this trap is – from end to end it’s fully 22 inches, (560mm). The circle of the trap is 12.75 inches in diameter (320mm) and the jaws 12 inches.
It shows all the signs of having been hand forged and probably about 150 to 200 years old.
