Description

Medieval Caltrop – This form of stabbing trap (sometimes referred to as a calthrop or caltrap) consists of four barbed legs or spines splayed at suitable angles so that however it falls it will rest on three of the points with the fourth pointing upwards. Each spine is about 1½” long.

This crude medieval device was strewn in numbers in the path of advancing enemy cavalry as a way of slowing pursuit.  Made by blacksmiths and armourers and issued to British troops to be used when appropriate. The caltrop dates from c.1400 – 1600 A.D.
